The truth lies somewhere in between and depends on what you expect from 3D printing. This article covers the current model lineup, the strengths of the Bambu Lab ecosystem, and the controversies surrounding the brand.

Who is behind Bambu Lab?

Bambu Lab was founded in 2022 as a startup by former engineers from DJI, the drone manufacturer. The company entered the market with the X1 Carbon, which combined high print speeds, automatic calibration, and the AMS automatic filament switching system. For context: at the time, most hobby printers required manual bed leveling, manual material changes, and fairly deep technical knowledge.

Bambu Lab brought a philosophy that the community often compares to switching from Android to iPhone. The printer works out of the box, the software is integrated, and updates arrive automatically. For experienced makers, this means a loss of control. For beginners and professionals who need a reliable tool, it is a major advantage.

Who should (and shouldn’t) buy a Bambu Lab?

Bambu Lab is an excellent choice for beginners who want quality prints without needing to understand printer kinematics, PID tuning, or firmware compilation. The A series offers an entry point under $300 with results that were unattainable three years ago even on machines costing twice as much.

For small businesses and professionals who need a reliable production tool, the H series and P2S are strong options. Print speed, consistent quality, and low maintenance requirements mean less downtime and more printed parts per day.

Bambu Lab may not suit users who value maximum openness and modifiability. The communities around Prusa Research, Voron, or RatRig offer fully open-source alternatives where users control every aspect of the machine. If you want to compile your own Klipper firmware, design your own print head, or run a printer completely offline with zero compromises, you will find limits with Bambu Lab.

For printing engineering materials like ABS, ASA, or nylon, you need an enclosed build chamber. In that case, the P1S is the minimum, ideally paired with an AMS add-on for convenient material switching. The Smoke Purifier, which filters 99% of particles down to 0.3 micrometers, is practically essential when printing ABS indoors.

Before buying, also consider service availability. Bambu Lab has a distribution center and customer support in Europe. Spare parts (nozzles, hotends, build plates) are available directly from the manufacturer and through authorized resellers. Compared to some Chinese brands, the service network is considerably better, though it does not match the level of local support that Prusa Research offers in the Czech Republic.

In 2026, Bambu Lab arguably represents the most complete ecosystem for hobby and semi-professional 3D printing. Automatic calibration, high speed, and the AMS system truly change expectations of what a 3D printer can do straight out of the box.
